He began at the Kandang Malay School up to Standard Six, then Sekolah al-Khairiyah Air Molek (one year) and Sekolah al-Nuriyah Paya Rumput, Sungai Udang (two years). He continued at Sekolah al-Masyhor Penang (two years) before studying at Al-Azhar University, Egypt for six years, obtaining the al-Aliyah (B.A) and al-Alamiyah (M.A) degrees in Shari’ah and Qanun.
He served as a public-relations clerk in Melaka in 1959, was appointed a permanent Kadi in 1968, acted as Chief Kadi of Melaka in 1972, and was appointed Chief Kadi of the Federal Territory in 1974 for six years.
He became the third Mufti of Melaka on 16 August 1979. He retired in 1984 and continued on contract as Mufti until 28 February 1996. He was also a member of the Melaka Islamic Religious Council and Chairman of the Melaka Fatwa Committee.
He taught religion widely in mosques across Melaka and delivered lectures in many places including Johor and the Federal Territory. He also produced many articles and religious treatises.
He was awarded two federal honours, the Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) and Johan Setia Mahkota (JSM), and the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM) by the Melaka State Government, carrying the title Datuk.
